Huskers defeat Pioneers, Improve to 2-0

Lincoln, Neb. -- The 54th ranked Nebraska women's tennis team defeated Denver 5-2 to improve to 2-0 on the season. Junior Stacey Tomkiewicz and sophomore Anne Oehme led the way winning two matches.

In singles, No. 6 Tomkiewicz defeated Maru Altamirano, 6-3, 6-2.

"I thought I played pretty good today." Said Tomkiewicz "I attacked the net good and use what I had."

At the No. 5 singles, Oehme defeated Elizabeth Matthews, 6-3, 6-4 to improve to 2-0. No. 77 ranked Katarina Balan defeated Barbara Kourim, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 singles. At the No. 5 singles, Rose Ketmauyra defeated Rossi Thomas in three sets, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4.

In the match of the day, No. 1 singles Amy Frisch was upset by Yanick Dullen, 7-4, 4-6, (10-3). Stephanie Ginsburg defeated No. 3 singles Leslie Harvey, 7-6 (8-6), 6-3, 10-6.

In doubles, Tomkiewicz and Oehme led the way defeating Thomas and Beth Messaros at the No. 3, 8-3. At No. 1 doubles, Dullens and Kourim, defeated Frisch and Balan, 8-2. In No. 2 doubles, Ketmauyra and L. Harvey defeated Ginsburg and Matthews, 8-5.

"For the first time playing this weekend, I thought we had a strong performance." Said Jacobson "From a individual standpoint, I thought Anna Oehme had strong matches in both singles and doubles this weekend."

Nebraska returns to action, this Sunday Feb. 2 when they travel to Columbia for the Big 12 opener against Missouri.
