Houston -- Nebraska Men's Tennis opened the season this past weekend at the Rice Indoor Invitational. Nebraska took home two singles wins and one doubles victory.
In singles action, Jose Rivera led the Huskers with a upset of No. 5 seed Khaled El Dorry of Texas A&M, 6-2, 6-4 before falling in the second round to Rice's Takehiko Morita, 6-2, 7-5. The other single victory came from Jacek Wolicki, who defeated Cody Jackson of Rice, 6-4, 6-2 before being ousted in the second round by Texas A&M's Ante Matkevic, 6-3,6-3.
Other Huskers in action Jose Hernan lost to Alex Menichini of TCU, 7-6, (7-3), 6-1. Hernan then lost to Texas A&M's Jarin Skube, 6-7, 6-4, 6-3 in the consolation round. Lance Mills took Baylor's Nathan McGregor to three sets before falling, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2. No. 3 seed Richard Baker of Baylor, 7-6, 7-3, also defeated Mills in the consolation second round.
Patrick Kennedy and Joel Reckewey were each defeated in their matches.
In doubles action, Nebraska's team of Reckewey and Hernan dropped their first round match against Jean Simon and Rodger Gubser of Texas 8-4. Reckewey and Hernan advance to the consolation seminfinals before having to withdrawal. Mills and Rivers were also ousted in the tournament losing to Rodrigo Echagary and Jose Zarhi of Texas, 8-2.
Nebraska returns to action on February 3, 2002 when they take on Missouri Valley Conference member Wichita State.
