Reno, Nev. -- Nebraska sophomore Shannon Pluhowsky won the USA Bowling Amateur Championships Friday, Dec. 14, with a pinfall of 11,503 and a 198.45 average.
Pluhowsky, who's record was 19-12-1, became the first woman to win both junior and adult U.S. Amateur Championships. She won the amateur title in 1999, 2000 and 2001.
Along with winning her first adult amateur title, Pluhowsky was named to 2002 TEAM USA. She has been a member of Junior TEAM USA for the past three years.
Senior Diandra Hyman and junior Kari Schwager were also named to TEAM USA. This will be the fourth year in a row that Hyman has been a member of TEAM USA. Hyman finished the tournament in fifth place with a pinfall of 11,171 and an average of 193.41. She had an overall record of 17-15-0.
Schwager, who was named to TEAM USA by a national selection committee, will make her debut as a 2002 TEAM USA member. Schwager finished the amateur championships in 22nd place. She had a pinfall of 10,647 and a 185.84 average. Schwager's record for the tournament was 12-20-0.
Senior Christine Couvillon placed 30th with a pinfall of 10,210, a 179.11 average and a record of 9-23-0.
Men's Note: Former Husker bowler Tony Manna, Jr. finished the men's USA Bowling Amateur Championships in third place. He had a pinfall of 11,766, a 210.11 average and a record of 22-10-0. Current Husker bowler John Asbaty finished the tournament in 30th place with a pinfall of 10,907 and an average of 194.77. His overall record was 10-22-0.
