Five Huskers Compete In USA Amateur Bowling Championships

Reno, Nev. -- Five bowlers from the University of Nebraska are competing in the 2001 USA Amateur Bowling Championships in Reno, Nev., Dec. 9-14. The tournament includes four rounds of qualifying and four rounds of match play. Competing for the Huskers are seniors Diandra Hyman and Christine Couvillon, junior Kari Schwager, sophomore Shannon Pluhowsky and redshirt freshman Kristyn Lee.

After the four qualifying rounds, Pluhowsky leads the field of 67 with a pinfall of 4,871 and an average of 202.96. Schwager is currently in fourth with a 4,659 pinfall and 194.13 average. Hyman is 13th (4,525 pinfall/188.54 average), Couvillon is 31st (4,299 pinfall/179.13 average) and Lee is 48th (4,133 pinfall/172.21 average).

The tournament continues Thursday, Dec. 13, with the first two rounds of match play and finishes on Friday, Dec. 14, with the final two rounds of match play. An awards ceremony will follow immediately after the final round of match play on Friday. The 2002 TEAM USA will be announced on Saturday, Dec. 15, following the conclusion of the tournament.

Men's Note: Former Nebraska men's bowler Tony Manna, Jr., currently stands in seventh place after three qualifying rounds with a 3,595 pinfall and a 199.72 average. Current Nebraska bowler John Asbaty is in the No. 15 spot with a 3,572 pinfall and a 198.44 average.
