Sole Husker Competes at Oregon Duck Classic

Eugene, Ore. - Freshman Jose Hernan was the only Nebraska tennis player competing at this weekends Oregon Duck Classic. Senior Fungai Tongoona and sophomore Patrick Kennedy were also scheduled to play, but were unable to travel to Oregon because of complications with travel arrangements.

Hernan lost to Mark Roberts of Boise State, 2-6, 7-5, 0-6, during the first round of the tournament. On Saturday, Hernan fell to Marcus Berntson of Boise State, 1-6, 6-4, 2-6, and also lost to Travis Parrott of Portland, 2-6, 2-6. Hernan faced Peter Malacek of Portland on Sunday, but lost 1-6, 1-6.

In doubles competition, Hernan, who was originally scheduled to team up with fellow Husker Tongoona, instead played alongside Chris King of Oregon. The duo lost both of their matches, falling to Berntson/Roberts of Boise State, 1-8, in the first round, and Parrott/Malacek of Portland, 5-8, on Saturday.

Hernan, who entered the tournament with a 7-5 record, finished the 2001 fall season with a 7-9 record. The Huskers completed their fall season at the Duck Classic and are not scheduled to compete again until Jan. 18-21, at the Rice Invitational in Houston, Texas.
