St. Louis, Mo. -- The University of Nebraska women's bowling team won their second straight tournament this weekend, winning the 2001 National Collegiate Team Match Games in St. Louis, Mo.
The Huskers, who have not had back-to-back tournament victories since 1999, when the team won both the Brunswick Southern Classic and the National Collegiate Team Match Games, won the tournament with a total pinfall of 13,869, 566 pins ahead of second-place Morehead State. This is the third time in six years that Nebraska has won the Team Match Games.
Sophomore Shannon Pluhowsky led the Huskers with a 237.778 average and placed third in the individual scoring. Seniors Diandra Hyman and Christine Couvillon placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Hyman finished with a 237 average, while Couvillon bowled a 235.778.
Besides having the high team series (3,587 pins) and high team game (1,220 pins), the Husker women own five of the seven tournament records at the National Collegiate Team Match Games. Pluhowsky owns the record for the high individual average with a 248.333, which she accomplished last year.
As for team records, Nebraska bested their previous high team series of 3,485 pins, which they set last year, by 102 pins. The Huskers' team scratch average of 1,133 also broke Wichita State's team scratch average of 1,104 set last year. They also broke Wichita State's team total points record with 1,260 points, 24 points higher than the previous record, also set last year.
Nebraska returns to action Dec. 1-2 at the Leatherneck Classic in Macomb, Ill.
