Lincoln -- University of Nebraska men's tennis coach Kerry McDermott announced that D.J. Geatz has signed a national letter-of-intent to play tennis for the Huskers next season. A native of Minneapolis, Minn., Geatz is currently ranked 65th nationally in the 18-and-under class, his first year in that classification. Last year, he was ranked 28th nationally in the 16-and-under age group, and he advanced to the semifinals of the national clay court championships in the 18-and-under division last summer.
"We are very excited to sign D.J.," McDermott said. "He's the highest-ranked American junior player we have signed in my 20 years of coaching here. The thing that makes him so good is that he is extremely competitive and wants to win every point."
The Husker head coach said that Geatz was sold on NU's academic support services.
"When he took his visit here, he fell in love with the school and the support staff for our athletes," McDermott said.
The addition of Geatz, along with current Husker freshmen Jose Hernan and Joel Reckawey, gives McDermott optimism about the future of the program.
"I think that those three are going to make a huge impact over the next few years, and help turn Nebraska tennis into a top-25 program," McDermott said.
