Stone Mountain, Ga. -- In the biggest tournament of the fall season, junior Jacek Wolicki kept the Nebraska Cornhuskers' hopes alive going into the third round of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association's Singles Pre-Qualifier, but lost to Gernot Fischer of Tennessee Tech, 2-6, 3-6.
Seniors Lance Mills and Fungai Tongoona both lost in the first round to Matias Marin of Baylor, 6-3, 1-6, 4-6, and Julien Gillet of Southern Alabama, 2-6, 2-6, respectively. Freshman Jose Hernan was also defeated in the first round by Anthony Jackson of Michigan, 4-6, 3-6.
Fellow Huskers Jose Rivera and Joel Reckewey followed Wolicki into the second round of the tournament. Rivera, a sophomore from Mexico City, Mexico, defeated Jimmy Borendame of Butler in the first round, 6-4, 6-4, then lost to Cody Conley of Louisville, 1-6, 1-6. Reckewey, a freshman from Lincoln, Neb., beat Paul Thoesen from Birmingham-Southern, 6-3, 6-3, before falling to Scott Mayer of Purdue, 2-6, 3-6, in the second round.
Wolicki, a junior transfer from Indiana State, defeated Mikko Haulos of St. Bonaventure, 6-0, 6-4 and Mike Kosoff from Bowling Green, 6-3, 6-2, in the first and second rounds, respectively, before his loss to Fischer in the third round.
Doubles competition began Saturday with three Husker teams competing. Mills/Wolicki defeated two teams yesterday, Richard Turner/Kyle Weidman of Birmingham-Southern, 8-3, and Christian Brodersen/Brian Isern of Alabama, 8-6, in the first and second rounds, respectively. Reckewey/Rivera lost to Peter Gardony/Nicolas Lopez-Acevedo of Bowling Green, 1-8, and the team of Hernan/Tongoona fell to David Kowalski/Bart Scott of New Mexico, 2-8.
In day two of doubles competition, Mills/Wolicki started the third round by beating Raj Gill/Justin Holsen of Marquette, 8-6. In the final round of the pre-qualifying tournament, the Husker team lost to Tony Mule/Marcio Torres of North Carolina-Greensboro, 3-8. With Wolicki's loss in the singles' competition and Mills/Wolicki's loss in the doubles, all Nebraska competitors have been eliminated in the non-team scoring event.
