Broomfield, Colo. -- The Nebraska womens golf team picked up its first victory of the season Tuesday, firing a final-round 291 at the Omni Interlocken Golf Club to bring home a one-stroke victory at the Heather Farr/CU Invitational.
Coupled with a first-round score of 301, NUs total score of 592 narrowly edged host-school Colorados 593.
I couldnt be prouder of this team, Head Coach Robin Krapfl said. We got off to a little bit of a shaky start, but we kept working hard and kept a great attitude. It was kind of our coming-out party.
The win marks the 17th time Krapfl has guided the Huskers, who led the field with 25 birdies in the tournament, to victory in her 15 seasons at Nebraska. It is also NUs first tournament title since the 2000 Alltel Husker Invitational.
Senior Amanda Sutcliffe led the way for Big Red with a record-setting performance. The Gunnedah, New South Wales, Australia, native shot a second-round 72 en route to a career-high second-place finish, one shot off the pace of individual medalist Walailak Satarak of UC-Irvine. In addition, Sutcliffes 36-hole score of 3-under-par 141 eclipsed the school-record of 144 set by Heidi Wall in 1995.
Amanda had a fantastic tournament and just hit a lot of great shots, Krapfl said.
Also posting a career-high finish was true freshman Stephanie Ruiz who carded a final-round 2-under 70 en route to finishing tied for third.
nother freshman, Merynn Ito of Aeia, Hawaii, finished tied for 12th after shooting a final-round 74.
Senior Catha Fogelberg posted a solid 75 in the final round to finish tied for 22nd. Rounding out NUs scoring was a 164 from freshman Beth Anne Cherry and a 160 from Stephanie Schaefer, who played as an individual. Schaefer finished tied for 48th, while Cherry tied for 56th place.
The conditions were right and we just played solid all day, Krapfl said. It was fun to do, especially with a young team. We are excited for things to come.
NU closes out its fall schedule Oct. 26-28 with the Alabama Capstone Intercollegiate in Brookwood, Ala.
