Freshman Hernan Upsets Defending Tournament Champion

Boston, Mass. -- Jose Hernan, a freshman from Asturias, Spain, defeated Oliver Choo of Harvard, 6-2, 6-2 in the second-round of the Harvard Crimson Classic, 6-2, 6-2. Choo is the defending champion of the tournament and was also the No. 5 seed in the event.

"This proves that Jose is the real deal," said Head Coach Kerry McDermott.

The tournament, scheduled to be held outdoors on a 30-court facility, was moved to a nine-court indoor facility due to rain. The rain slowed the tournament since fewer games could be played simultaneously.

In the "A" Flight of the singles competition, No. 4 seed Lance Mills, a senior from Dallas, Texas, defeated Nick Goldberg of Brown University, 6-2, 6-2 before losing in the second-round to Mark Riddell of Harvard, 2-6, 4-6. Senior Fungai Tongoona and freshman Jacek Wolicki were both defeated in the first-round of the tournament. Tongoona lost to Dan Halmovic of Harvard, 1-6, 4-6. Wolicki was beaten by Stuart Waters of Iowa, 5-7, 2-6. During the first-round of the tournament, Hernan defeated Greg Schweitzer of Rutgers, 6-3, 6-3.

The "B" Flight of the singles competition, freshman Joel Reckeway defeated Derrick Chou of Boston College, 6-1, 5-7, 7-5. In the second-round, Reckeway lost to David Hiniker of Harvard, 4-6, 5-7. Freshman Jose Rivera beat Ross Pytko of Boston College, 7-6, 6-3 before losing to Jeff Augustyn of M.I.T., 4-6, 6-3, 2-6. Junior Jeff Nabity also won in the first-round, defeating Bo Wiegand of Harvard, 6-3, 6-1. Nabity was the only Husker to win in the second-round, beating Chris McCoy of Boston College, 6-3, 5-7, 7-6.

During the doubles competition of the tournament, Tongoona/Hernan defeated Chris Chiou/Brian Wan, 9-8 while Mills/Wolicki lost to Oliver Choo/Jonathan Chu of Harvard, 2-8. Both matches were played in the "A" Flight. In Flight "B", Rivera/Nabity beat Bob Murray/Derrick Chou of Boston College, 9-8.

Competition in both singles and doubles will resume on Saturday.
