Nebraska Women Win Six Matches at Bronco Invitational

Kalamazoo, Mich. -- The Nebraska women's tennis team won six singles matches at the Bronco Invitational, hosted by Western Michigan University.

No. 2 seeded Katrina Balan defeated Larissa Chinwah of Western Michigan 7-5, 6-2. Gitte Ostermann took her match 6-2, 6-3, beating Abbie Hodge of Ball State. Amy Frisch lost her first round match to No. 1 seed Linda Tran of Indiana, 6-0, 6-4. All three matches were in the Flight "A" singles competition.

In Flight "B" of the Bronco Invitational, Anna Oehme and Rebecca Harvey were both victorious over Ball State's Leisa Brooks and Kara Sullivan, respectively. Oehme defeated Brooks, 6-1 before Brooks retired in the second game. Harvey beat Sullivan 6-1, 6-1. The only loss for the Huskers in the "B" Flight came when Martina Grimm of Indiana defeated Stacey Tomkiewicz, 7-5, 7-6.

The other singles competition at the Bronco Invitational was a round robin bracket. Nebraska's Rose Ketmayura and Katie Garcia both won in two games. Ketmayura defeated Rachel Dybas of DePaul University, 6-4, 6-1, and Garcia defeated Marquette's Amanda Devraj, 6-2, 6-0.

In doubles competition, the Huskers had three teams participating in the Flight "A" competition and one team participated in the Flight "B" Round Robin. Balan/Frisch enjoyed a first-round bye before being defeated by Anna Pavlovic/Eva Herrera of Marquette, 8-3. Oehme/Ostermann defeated Leisa Brooks/Jenny Batty from Ball State 8-3 in the first-round. They were then defeated by Linda Tran/Karie Schlukebir in the second-round, 8-4. Tomkiewicz/Ketmayura were defeated in the first-round by Larissa Chinwah/Brookley Crews of Western Michigan, 8-6 and also lost in the consolation round to Melissa Roach/Abbie Hodge of Ball State, 8-6.
In the round robin competition, Harvey/Garcia defeated Lindsay Ray of Indiana/Susan Kelley of Ball State, 9-8. The pair also beat Alyce Zollman/Shelly Brizendine of Ball State 8-3.

For the second day of the Bronco Invitational, the singles competition will continue with Frisch taking on Herrera from Marquette, Ostermann will face Gen Charron of Marquette, and Balan will match up against Roach of Ball State. Flight "B" will have contests between Oehme and J.J. Levins of Indiana, Tomkiewicz and Batty of Ball State, and Harvey will face Crews of Western Michigan. In the round robin, Ketmayura will face Zollman of Ball State and Garcia will match up against Brizendine, also from Ball State.

Matches will begin at 8:30 a.m. Saturday.
