Huskers Move On To Second Round of Big 12 Championships

Waco, Texas -- The Nebraska women's tennis team moved onto the second round of the Big 12 Championships after defeating Iowa State, 4-1, at Waco, Texas.

The Cyclones got out to a quick lead by picking up the doubles point with wins at the No. 1 and 3 spots. The Huskers picked up their lone doubles win at the No. 2 spot, where juniors Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and Amy Frisch (Crescent, Ky.) defeated Edna Vazquez and Courtney Leese, 8-5. This was the second match between the two Balan and Frisch and Vazquez and Leese, and NU won both meetings.

With the Huskers getting quick wins at the No. 3, 4, 5 and 6 spots, both teams decided to call the No. 1 and 2 matches. In the No. 1 spot, freshman Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) split the matches with Noortje Cornelisson, 2-6, 6-5, while at the No. 2 spot, Balan split with Sabrina Evers, 4-6, 6-0. Senior Ndali Ijomah (Seattle, Wash.) over powered here opponent, defeating Edna Vazquez, 6-1, 6-1.

Nebraska will next face Baylor, Friday at 1:30 in Waco, Texas. In the first meeting between NU and the Bears, Nebraska lost 5-2.
