Columbus, Ohio - At the 2001 NCAA Rifle Championships, Nebraska sophomore Amanda Trujillo finished second in the individual air rifle competition, narrowly missing out on a first-place finish. Trujillo's score of 392 matched that of Alaska-Fairbanks' Mathew Emmons, but Emmons was awarded the title on the basis of inner 10s. Emmons fired 30 inner 10s to Trujillo's 27.
Competing for the first time with air rifle, Trujillo, who finished seventh in the smallbore at last season's NCAA Championships, said her performance would serve as motivation for next season.
"It feels pretty good," Trujillo said. "It's lighting a fire under my butt because I want to be No. 1."
Trujillo's score of 392, set a new school record for the highest air rifle score fired in an individual competition, surpassing the 390 fired by Terim Richards at last year's NCAA Championships.
For the second year in a row, Richards and sophomore Nicole Allaire represented the Huskers in the air rifle competition. Richards fired a 387 to finish eighth, while Allaire shot a 383 to finish 11th.
Coach Karen Anthony said she was pleased with her team's performance.
"Certainly for Amanda, it says a lot about her ability to hold it together in this competition," Anthony said. "She has worked all season to keep her scores up. I'm really pleased with Amanda and everybody who shot today."
Trujillo, Richards, Allaire and the rest of the Huskers will be back in action Saturday, beginning with the team air rifle competition at 8 a.m. and followed by the smallbore competition at 11:30 a.m.
