Newport Beach, Calif. -- The Nebraska women's tennis team won another close match, this time against 59th-rated Penn State, 4-3, at the neutral site of Newport Beach, Calif., late Sunday.
The Huskers got out to a rough start by dropping all three of the doubles matches. The Huskers, who have gotten used to receiving the doubles point, bounced back to take four out of the six singles matches to win the dual.
In doubles action, PSU's Rebecca Ho and Pilar Montgomery defeated junior Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and freshman Rose Ketmayura (Austin, Texas), 8-1, at the No. 1 spot, while at the No. 2 spot, PSU's Janelle Perez and Judy Wang defeated NU freshmen Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) and Elissa Kinard (Charleston, S.C.), 8-3. Leigh Ann Merryman and Teresa Whiteside of PSU defeated junior Amy Frisch (Crescent, Ky.) and senior Ndali Ijomah (Seattle, Wash.), 8-2, at the No. 3 spot.
In singles action, at the No. 1 spot, Pilar Montgomery handed L. Harvey her worse loss of the year, 6-0, 6-1, while NU's Balan grabbed a win at the No. 2 spot, defeating Ho, 6-4, 6-2. Ijomah took a win from Wang, 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 3 spot, and Frisch defeated PSU's Perez, 6-1, 6-1. Kinard brought home the Huskers' winning point, defeating Kristen Nowicki, 7-6, 6-3, while Merryman defeated NU's freshman Rebecca Harvey, 6-3, 6-1.
The 56th-rated Huskers improve their record to 11-2 overall, 1-2 in the Big 12. The Huskers' next match will be Tuesday against California State Fullerton in Fullerton Calif.
