Lincoln, Neb. -- The Nebraska women's tennis team opened their 2001 season with a 5-2 win over Colorado State Friday evening at Woods Tennis Center.
The Huskers swept all three doubles matched after taking a 4-2 lead at the end of singles. The Huskers swept the three doubles matches for the final margin and starts the season at 1-0.
With the loss, Colorado State drops to 1-3 with other losses coming to Utah and BYU.
"I thought this was good opener," Jacobson said. "The doubles matches did very well."
In doubles play, Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) and Rose Ketmayura (Austin, Texas) teamed up to beat Amanda Bartz and Allison Lisle at the No. 1 spot 8-3. In No. 2 Elissa Kinard (Charleston, S.C.) and Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) beat Sanja Hansson and Catherine Sullivan 8-2. Ndali Ijomah (Seattle, Wash.) and Amy Frisch (Crescent, Springs, KY) defeated Morena Jovisic and Brenna Tindall at the No. 3 doubles spot 8-1.
Ijomah beat Jovisic 6-2, 6-1 in No. 2 singles. Frisch defeated Lisle 6-7, (8), 6-0, 6-0 at No. 4 singles. At No. 5 singles Harvey defeated Sullivan 6-1, 6-1, and sister Rebecca Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) defeated Tindall 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles.
The only two losses came at No. 1 singles where Hansson defeated Balan in a tough 7-5, 7-5 match, and No. 3 singles where Bartz defeated Kinard in 6-4, 7-6, (5).
The Huskers' next match will be at 10 a.m. Saturday morning against Wichita State at Woods Tennis Center.
