College Station, Texas -- The Nebraska women's tennis team had a tough time in Texas, losing to Texas on Saturday, and then Texas A&M on Sunday at College Station.
Nebraska's only bright spot in the dual against the Aggies was at the No. 2 singles spot where junior Katarina Balan (Belgrade, Yugoslavia) was able to hold off A&M's Jessica Roland, 6-2, 7-6.
The Huskers' doubles teams, for the second straight dual, where unable to get a victory at any spot. Though the Huskers were not able to win a match, the No. 1 team of Balan and freshman Rose Ketmayura (Austin, Texas) played the No. 11 Aggies team of Ashley Hedberg and Jessica Roland very tough, losing only 9-7.
In singles action, Aggies Olivia Karlikova handed freshman Leslie Harvey (San Diego, Calif.) her third straight loss of the season, 6-4, 6-2, at the No. 1 spot. At the No. 2 spot, Balan brought home the Huskers' lone win, defeating A&M's Roland, 6-2, 7-6, while Martina Nedorostova defeated senior Ndali Ijomah (Seattle, Wash.) 7-6, 6-4 at the No. 3 spot. At the No. 4 spot, Majorie Terburgh had few problems defeating NU's freshman Elissa Kinard (Charleston, S.C.) and, at the No. 5 spot, A&M's 89th-ranked Roberta Spencer gave junior Amy Frisch her first defeat, 6-4, 6-3. At the No. 6 spot, Ashley Hedberg of A&M defeated Rebecca Harvey, 6-3, 6-1.
In doubles action, Balan and Ketmayura gave No. 11 Hedberg and Roland a tough fight, losing 7-9. Aggies Nedorostova and Terburgh defeated Leslie Harvey and Kinard, 8-5, at the No. 2 spot, and Leah Killen and Eva Marcial defeated NU's Frisch and Ijomah, 8-6, at the No. 3 spot.
The Huskers' next match will be against Missouri on Saturday, March 3 at Woods Tennis Center at 10 a.m.
