Austin, Texas -- Sophomore All-American Elvira Fischer and freshman Rebecca Wolfe captured individual titles as Nebraska finished second in the team race at the 2001 Big 12 Championships on Saturday.
In the meet's three-day span, defending champion Texas won 16 of 20 events while cruising to their third-straight Big 12 title with 997.50 points. Texas A&M finished third with a team score of 565, Missouri followed with 434, Iowa State (426) and Kansas finish sixth with a score of 396.
Fischer claimed the third Big 12 title of her career by winning 200-yard breaststroke in an NCAA qualifying time of 2:12.91. Teammate sophomore Keri Hehn finish second with a time of 2:15.12 and sophomore Sarah Peffer added an eight-place finish with a time of 2:20.62.
Wolfe, a freshman from League City, Texas claimed her first Big 12 title of her career by winning the 200-yard butterfly in a school record time of 1:57.94. Fellow freshman Carmen Cosgrove finished sixth in a time of 2:02.10. Wolfe's record setting time breaks the Big 12 record held by former Husker Destiny Lauren.
Freshman Jackie Lobdell earned a third-place finish in the 1,650-yard freestyle in a time of 16:36.76, and added another third-place finish in the 200-yard backstroke in a time of 2:00.65. Sophomore All-American Lindsey Highstrom finished fourth in the 200-yard backstroke to pace Nebraska in a time of 2:01.09. Senior All-American Beth Karaica finished fifth in the 100-yard freestyle in a time of 49.84
