Austin, Texas -- After the second day of the 2001 Big 12 Swimming and Diving Championships, the Nebraska women's swimming team climbed to second place with a score of 400.50. Texas continues to dominate the meet. After 14 events, the Longhorns have won all but one event so far. Texas A&M stands in third place with a score of 356.50. Iowa State is fourth with 309.50 and Missouri (268.6) is in a battle for fifth with Kansas (266).
Nebraska was led by sophomore All-American Elvira Fischer, who finished second in the 100-yard breaststroke in an NCAA qualifying time of 1:02.06. Fellow Husker sophomore Keri Hehn finish third in a time of 1:03.14. Nebraska's 200-yard medley team of sophomore Lindsey Highstrom, Fischer, freshman Carmen Cosgrove and senior All-American Beth Karaica finished second in the event with a time of 1:44.47.
Freshman Rebecca Wolfe added a third-place finish in the 400-yard IM in a time of 4:22.92. Carmen Cosgrove paced Nebraska with a third-place finish in the 100-yard butterfly in a time of 54.58. Highstrom helped Nebraska with a fourth-place finish in the 100-yard backstroke in a time of 56.49.
The Big 12 Championships continues Saturday, Feb. 17, 2001 with preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m.
