El Paso - After more than a month off from competition, the Nebraska rifle team was unable to top defending national champion Alaska-Fairbanks in a match hosted by Texas El-Paso on Friday. The Huskers, who struggled with the smallbore rifle, shot a season-low score of 6,120, well off the Nanooks' total of 6,234.
Even though it could only muster 4,569 points in the smallbore competition, Nebraska barely missed claiming the air rifle title as two Huskers recorded career highs in the event. Nebraska was just five points off Alaska-Fairbanks' score, totaling 1,551 to the Nanooks' 1,556.
Throughout the match the Huskers were led by sophomore Amanda Trujillo, who equaled her personal-best air rifle score of 393, and fired a team-best 1,162 in smallbore. Freshman Melissa Downsbrough showed maturity beyond her years by rebounding from a disappointing smallbore performance (1,134) to record a personal-best air rifle score of 391, marking the second time this season the State College, Pa., native has broken the 390 barrier.
Junior Terim Richards fired a 385, while sophomore Nicole Allaire rounded out the air rifle team, scoring a 382. Allaire was also a member of the smallbore team, recording a 1,158, while junior Rachel Spiry shot a 1,115.
Alaska-Fairbanks' Matt Emmons took home top honors in both rifles, recording scores of 1,186 in smallbore and 397 in air rifle.
The Huskers will battle UTEP Saturday, in a dual slated to begin at 8 a.m.
