Huskers Shutout Richmond in NCAA Tournament

Lincoln, Neb. -- The second-ranked Nebraska soccer team posted its 16th shutout of the season on Saturday, defeating Richmond, 4-0, before a crowd of 432 in the second-round of the NCAA Tournament at the Abbott Sports Complex. With the win, the Huskers (22-1-0) advance to the Sweet 16 for the fifth consecutive year, and will face either Connecticut or Wisconsin at 7:05 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 17, in Lincoln.

NU junior midfielder Meghan Anderson put the Huskers on the board with a penalty kick at 15:59, and the Huskers added three second-half goals, while senior goalkeeper Karina LeBlanc lowered her goals-against average to 0.38. LeBlanc, a Hermann Trophy candidate, recorded eight saves in the effort.

The Huskers outshot Richmond 30-12, and outcornered the Spiders, 15-1.

"Overall, I thought we played fairly well," Nebraska Head Coach John Walker said. "We did a lot of good things offensively."

With the help of Anderson's 12th goal of the year, the Huskers led 1-0 at the half. Anderson scored after sophomore forward Christine Latham was tripped in the top of the penalty box.

In the second half, senior forward Lauren Tatum slid and redirected a cross from senior defender Jenny Benson just past Richmond goalkeeper Kristen Samuhel at 57:11. The score marked Tatum's sixth career NCAA Tournament goal in four seasons.

"In the postseason, you have to step up your game," Tatum said. "If you lose, you're done."

Freshman forward Christy Harms added her ninth goal of the season, and has now scored in four consecutive games. The Blue Springs, Mo., native posted goals in all three of the Huskers' Big 12 Tournament matchups. Harms' goal came when she beat a Spider on a quick breakaway and put the ball past Samuhel at 75:31.

Benson notched the Huskers' final goal at 84:42 on a pass from junior forward Danica Carey. Benson, a first-team All-Big 12 selection, has now scored 17 points this season, including seven points in NU's last four games.

Thirteenth-ranked Connecticut will take on Wisconsin on Sunday at 11:00 a.m. in Storrs, Connecticut. The Huskers defeated Connecticut on Sept. 17, in Storrs.
