Lexington, Va. -- The Nebraska rifle team captured its second match title in as many days when the Huskers defeated the Virginia Military Institute on Sunday. The Huskers, who won the Great Eight Rifle Match in Annapolis, Md., on Saturday, used scores of 1,545 in air rifle and 4,605 in smallbore for an overall total of 6,150 to claim the title. The Keydets fired scores of 1,349 in air rifle and 4,339 in smallbore for a total of 5,688.
Nebraska dominated the match, recording the highest scores in both events. In the team competition, junior Terim Richards led the Huskers in the air rifle firing a 389, followed by sophmore Amanda Trujillo (388), freshman Nicole Allaire (384) and junior Rachel Spiry (384). Competing as individuals, Melissa Downsbrough fired a 388, while Karen Aspden shot a 365.
Just a day after setting a new school record in the air rifle, Nebraska narrowly missed breaking the school record in the smallbore. The Huskers were three points shy of breaking the record of 4,608 set Feb. 13, 2000 in a match against Ohio State. Trujillo led all shooters, firing a 1,158, followed by Allaire (1,156), Downsbrough (1,147) and Spiry (1,144). Shooting unattached, Aspden fired a 1,117.
The Huskers are off for two weeks, with their next competition coming against Jacksonville State in Jacksonville, Ala.
