Belcher Shatters Husker Testing Records

Lincoln -- Despite an extended layoff from the basketball court, Husker senior guard Cookie Belcher apparently has not lost a step. The 6-4 Belcher had an impressive showing in the Huskers' recent spring testing, establishing six Nebraska basketball testing records.

Belcher, who missed most of last season while recovering from offseason wrist surgery, shattered his own Husker Performance Index record by more than 150 points with a score of 2,537 points. The Performance Index is the total number of points earned for the four performance indicators tested at Nebraska--10-yard dash, 40-yard dash, pro agility run and vertical jump.

Belcher scored a record 675 points in the 10-yard dash with a time of 1.52 seconds. The mark of 1.52 tied his own personal best, which is tied with former teammate Tyronn Lue for the Husker basketball record. Belcher ran a record-breaking time of 4.48 in the 40-yard dash, bettering his previous best of 4.53 seconds, which was a Husker record. His 40 time also earned him a record for 40-yard dash points with 744. In addition to his speed, Belcher also showcased his leaping ability, breaking the men's basketball performance records in both the vertical jump (36") and vertical jump points (596). Belcher's previous best vertical jump was 35 inches, which also tied him with Lue for the Husker school record.

Several other Huskers had impressive showings in the spring testing. Senior forward Steffon Bradford had the second fastest 40-yard dash time on the team at 4.76 seconds and was also second in Performance Index points with 2,269 points. Since arriving on campus last August, the 6-6 Bradford has added 14 pounds of lean muscle mass to his frame, while keeping his body fat at just eight percent. The rugged power forward now checks in at 250 pounds.

Senior guard Rodney Fields posted the second-best vertical jump on the squad at 35.5 inches, bettering the previous record. Senior forward Ross Buckendahl posted a team-best in the pro agility run with a time of 4.14 seconds, which earned him a team-best 520 points in the test.
