Kansas City, Mo. -- The season for the Nebraska men's tennis team officially ended today as Colorado (9-10) beat the Huskers, 4-3, in first round action of the 2000 Big 12 Conference Championships. The Huskers finished the year with a 7-12 record, including an 0-8 record in the Big 12.
Coach Kerry McDermott thought his team had improved their play since the last time they played Colorado earlier in the season.
"We played better than we did when we played at Colorado, but I think they just wanted it a little bit more than we did today," he said.
The doubles team of Ryan Haith and Adnan Hadzialic dominated Artur Rusiecki and Andy Winter in the No. 3 match, 8-1, while the doubles team of Andrew Wiese/Kai Rieke (No. 1) and Fungai Tongoona/Jorge Abos Sanchez (No. 2) lost to Colorado's Mirko Jovanovic/Maciej Dilaj and Bryan Knepper/Justin Hunter, 8-2 and 8-6, respectively.
McDermott was disappointed with the Huskers double play.
"I told them that we needed to win the doubles point and it would make the difference in the match," he said. "We have not been able to get it done in doubles all year long."
In singles action, Abos Sanchez beat Dilaj, 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 while Rieke (No. 3) and Haith (No. 6) also recorded singles wins. Rieke won in straight sets over Colorado's Rusiecki, 6-1, 6-3, and Haith defeated Winter, 4-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Colorado will move on to play first-seeded Baylor on Friday at 8:30 a.m. at the Plaza Tennis Center in Kansas City, Mo. The rest of the quarterfinals will continue through Friday and the tournament will conclude with the championship match being played at 1 p.m. on Sunday, April 30.
