Huskers Fall in 10th as Baylor Sweeps NU

Waco, Texas -- Steve Dorneman's pinch-hit single in the bottom of the tenth inning drove home Nolan Leinweber from second to give Baylor a 7-6 win and a series sweep over the Huskers on Sunday at Baylor Ballpark in Waco, Texas.

Mike Huggins got the Bears started in the 10th with a one-out infield single to start the Baylor rally. Matt Williams followed with a sharply hit ball to NU second baseman Josh Hesse, who dropped the ball giving Baylor runners at first and second. Leinweber came into pinch-run for Huggins before Dorneman singled off Thom Ott to hand Nebraska the extra-inning defeat.

It was the first time Nebraska (18-11, 7-8) had been swept this season. Nebraska trailed 6-2 in the contest, but rallied to score one run in the seventh and three in the eighth, capped by a two RBI single from Brandt Vlieger, to tie the game at 6-6.

Nebraska challenged in the ninth with runners at first and third, but Will Bolt was picked off at first base to end the inning. The Huskers dodged a bullet in the bottom of the ninth, when the Bears loaded the bases with one out. Ott came in from the bullpen and forced shorstop Jace Brewer to hit into a double play to end the inning.

Nebraska got outstanding help from its bullpen after Scott Fries allowed six runs and four hits through 3 1/3 innings, however only three of the runs were earned. Trevor Bullock allowed just two hits in 3 2/3 innings of scoreless relief and senior Chad Wiles allowed just one hit in 1 1/3 inning of work.

Brandt Vlieger and Adam Stern carried the Huskers offensively. Vlieger went 3-for-5 and drove in four of Nebraska's six runs. Stern went 3-for-4 and drove in the other three runs.
