College Station, Texas - Despite hitting only one field goal in overtime, Texas A&M defeated Nebraska 83-76 Saturday afternoon at Reed Arena in College Station, Texas.
The Aggies, who improved to 8-19 overall and 4-12 in the Big 12, connected on 11-of-12 free throws in overtime, as TAMU outscored NU 13-6 in the extra session. The Huskers were just 1-of-8 in overtime, including 0-4 from 3-point range, in dropping to 11-18 overall and 4-12 in conference play.
The Huskers trailed 54-40 with 16 minutes remaining before Larry Florence and Matt Davison led a Huskers comeback, combining for all of NU's points in an 11-1 second half run, as Davision's free throw gave the Huskers a 63-62 lead with eight minutes remaining.
Florence led Nebraska with 20 points, six rebounds, six assists and four steals, while Davison scored all six of his points in the second half.
NU led 70-69 after a Cary Cochran free throw with 3:04 remaining, but the Huskers were held scoress for the rest of regulation and Jamaal Gilchrist's free throw with 1:04 remaining sent the contest into overtime, NU's first overtime game since an 81-78 double overtime win against Eastern Illinois in the season opener.
Freshman Bernard King scored 30 points and gradded 10 rebounds for the Aggies, who broke a five-game losing streak.
King became the first freshman in Big 12 history to score 30 or more points three times in a season and broke the Big 12 and Texas A&M freshman season scoring records. King finished with 468 points. The previous record was 447, set by Iowa State's Marcus Fizer in 1997-98.
Louis Truscott added 14 points and eight rebounds, while Steffon Bradford and Kimani Ffriend finished with 12 and 11 points. Ffriend added eight rebounds as the Huskers enjoyed a 36-31 rebounding advantage.
Nebraska returns to action this Thursday at the Big 12 Tournament. The Huskers will either be the eighth or 10th seed, depending on Iowa State's game at Baylor Saturday evening.
