Huskers Split Weekend Matches

Lincoln -- The No. 63 Nebraska men's tennis team opened its season by splitting weekend matches in Houston, Texas. The Huskers (1-1) defeated the University of Texas-San Antonio 6-1 Friday then fell 4-3 to Rice on Saturday.

Against UTSA, NU took an early advantage, claiming the doubles point with wins by Ryan Haith and Kai Rieke at No. 1doubles and Jorge Abos Sanchez and Juan Hamdan at No. 3 doubles. The Huskers never lost momentum, capturing wins at Nos. 1-5 singles before Andrew Wiese lost in a tough three-set match at No. 6.

In Saturday's four-and-a-half hour match against Rice, Nebraska started off well, winning the doubles point and matches and No. 1 and No. 2 singles. But Rice rallied, sweeping the rest of the singles matches. RU Senior Kevin Hargrove clinched the Rice victory when he came back from a 1-5 deficit in his first set against Wiese to win 7-5, 7-6 (10-8) at No. 6 singles.

Nebraska played both matches without No. 1 singles player and co-captain Lance Mills, who is out with a foot injury.

"It was a little disappointing against Rice," McDermott said. "We won the doubles point, and that was huge. Then, we won two of the top three singles matches. All we needed was one win in the bottom half of the lineup, but it didn't happen. I think the guys were a little nervous.

"This match is early enough in the year that is doesn't make or break our season. Hopefully, we'll learn from this and move on."

The Huskers return to action Feb. 11-13 with their first home matches of the season. Nebraska will play host to No. 17 Texas A&M Feb. 11 at 6 p.m. and Creighton Feb. 13 at 9 a.m. Both matches are at Woods Tennis Center.
