St. Charles, Mo. -- The Nebraska men's basketball team fell to 2-2 on the season with an 81-62 loss to Rutgers in the fifth-place game of the Hoop and Quill Classic in St. Charles, Mo., Sunday afternoon.
Junior center Kimani Ffriend led the Huskers with 16 points, seven rebounds and three blocks, while junior Rodney Fields scored a career-high 14 points on 6-of-11 shooting from the floor. In addition, sophomore Louis Truscott added six points and a career-best eight rebounds in the losing effort.
Neither team led by more than three points in the first half until Rutgers went on an 8-2 run to take a 32-23 lead with 5:23 left in the half. Jeff Greer scored the last six points of that spurt with consecutive 3-pointers. Greer finished with a game-high 23 points, including 3-of-5 from 3-point range, to pace four Scarlet Knights (4-1) in double figures.
NU cut the lead to 39-31 at the break, but the Scarlet Knights (4-1) opened the second half on a 21-7 spurt in the first seven minutes of the second half to extend the lead to 60-38. Nebraska cut the lead to 15 midway in the second half, but could get no closer.
The Huskers return home to face Western Carolina in the first round of the Ameritas Classic this Friday, Dec. 3 at 6:30 p.m.
