Dallas, Texas -- 32 Husker football players were among the 140 student-athletes who earned Academic All-Big 12 honors Tuesday by the conference office. It is the fourth straight season Nebraska has led the conference in academic honorees, as 24 Huskers captured first-team honors, eight more than runner-up Texas Tech's total of 16
The list is highlighted by senior linebacker Brian Shaw, who is just one of five student-athletes with a 4.0 grade-point average. The Deweese, Neb., native also becomes just the third Husker to earn four first-team academic all-conference honors, joining Mike Stigge (1989-92) and Rob Zatechka (1991-94)
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the student-athletes earned such distinction following new criteria set up by the faculty athletic representatives (FARs) last summer. First-team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.2 or better grade-point average, while the second-team are those who have a 3.0 to 3.19 GPA.
To qualify, student-athletes must maintain a 3.0 grade point average or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are eligible.
