Rifle Team Caps Off Weekend With Second Win

Wilkes-Barre, Pa. -- The Nebraska rifle team concluded their weekend competition with a win at King's College on Sunday, Oct. 17. The Huskers swept the Monarchs, claiming the air rifle and smallbore individual titles as well as the overall match championship.

In just their second competition of the season, the Huskers shot a 1,556 out of a possible 1,600 to claim the air rifle team title. Led by freshman Nicole Allaire, who took the individual title with a personal best 395 out of a possible 400, Nebraska claimed the top three places. Sophomore Terim Richards also fired a personal best, shooting a 390 to take second place. Freshman Amanda Trujillo claimed the third-place spot firing a 389. Sophomore Rachel Spiry rounded out the scoring, shooting a 382.

Head Coach Karen Anthony said the team shot considerably better in the air rifle competition than they did on Saturday.

"If they continue to shoot that well," she said, "that kind of a score would easily qualify us to shoot in the NCAA Championships (according to last years standards)."

In addition to winning the air rifle title, Allaire fired a 576 out of a possible 600 to claim her second consecutive smallbore title. Allaire, who hails from Kearny, N.J., also won the smallbore competition Saturday in West Point, N.Y. Trujillo fired a 574 to claim the runner-up spot for the second time this season. Freshman Victoria Ridge shot a 559 while Spiry fired a 557. Nebraska's team total of 2,266 out of a possible 2,400 bettered the Monarch's team total of 2,183.

Anthony said she was very pleased with how the team shot even though the smallbore totals were down a bit from yesterday.

"This match went really well," she said. "We certainly won by a considerable margin."

Nebraska was named the overall match winner with a team total, air rifle and smallbore scores combined, of 3,822 out of a possible 4,000. King's College tallied a 3,663.
