Huskers Post Sweep Over Jayhawks with 13-8 win

Lawrence, Kan. -- The Nebraska baseball team won its seventh straight game and earned its first three-game sweep on the road since 1993 by defeating Kansas 13-8 in front of a crowd of 678 at Hoglund Ballpark in Lawrence on Sunday.

The Huskers, who defeated KU 13-4 and 18-6 in the first two games of the series, last earned a three-game road sweep at Iowa State on April 24 and April 25, 1993. The sweep puts NU 5-1 in the Big 12 Conference and 16-6 overall after winning 12 of their last 13 games.

"It was an outstanding weekend to win three straight games at Kansas," NU Coach Dave Van Horn said. "We did a great job of keeping our intensity throughout the series and are kids played hard to win three straight. All the way around things were positive for us this weekend. The kids think winning is fun and that attitude has gotten contagious."

Senior left-handed pitcher Jay Sirianni threw seven innings to earn his third win of the season. Sirianni, 3-1 on the year, struck out nine and allowed four runs in the sixth inning to earn the win. Offensively, senior Erik Mumm had three hits and scored four runs and junior Jamal Strong had four hits and scored four times.

The Husker offense jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning. In the inning, Craig Moore, starting at first for an injured Ken Harvey, walked to start things off. With one out, Bolt singled and Moore advanced to third. Moore scored when KU starter Colin Call had an arrant pick off throw at first. After Moore scored, Bolt stole second and moved to third on a single by Mumm. Strong followed with a single that scored Bolt.

Brandt Vlieger was hit by a Call pitch to load the bases and Danny Kimura lifted a sacrifice fly to right that scored Bolt. With Strong at third and Vlieger at second, Jeff Hedman ripped a two-RBI single to center to put NU ahead 5-0.

In the third, Mumm hit a two-out double to get things going. Strong belted an RBI single to score Mumm and after Strong stole second, he scored on a single to left by Vlieger.

The Huskers took an 11-0 lead with four runs in the fifth. The Huskers used five consecutive hits to score four runs. Mumm had his third hit of the game and scored on a hit-and-run double by Strong. Vlieger singled, and with Strong at third and Vlieger at first, Kimura ripped an RBI double to right center. Hedman followed with an RBI single to give the Huskers a 13-4 lead.

In the seventh, Mumm and Strong scored their fourth runs of the game to put the Huskers ahead 13-4.
