Ogallala, Neb.--The seventh-ranked Nebraska wrestling team earned its 12th win of the season and its sixth dual victory in nine days with a 29-16 win over unranked Air Force Sunday afternoon in Ogallala, Neb. The Huskers, wrestling in their annual "home away from home" dual, treated Western Nebraska fans to a convincing victory.
Nebraska won six of the 10 matchups, with one loss coming from a forfeit at 184 pounds.
Picking up wins for Nebraska were: 125--#6 Paul Gomez (by forfeit), 133--#16 Todd Beckerman (pinned Andy Peters at 1:44), 157--Billy Gabel (5-4 decision over Alex Pelbath), 165--Tony Denke (6-4 decision over Terry Parham), 197--#9 Scott Munson (tech. fall Justin Binder, 23-7) and Hwt--#8 J.R. Plienis (pinned Phil Johnston at 2:23).
The win marked NU's third this weekend. On Friday at the 16th Annual Oregon Wrestling Classic in Portland, Nebraska defeated 18th-ranked Oregon State, 19-12, and downed unranked Oregon, 24-17.
Husker Head Coach Tim Neumann said he was happy with how his team performed at the end of a grueling nine-day schedule that included nine dual meets in Iowa, Oregon and Nebraska.
"Tony and Billy really stepped up for us today and did a nice job," Neumann said. "This has been a challenging few days mentally and physically, so we're looking forward to getting back to more of a regular schedule."
The Huskers will be in action next week on Jan. 29 at Northern Iowa and will host Iowa State at the Devaney Center on Jan. 31.
