Scott M. Fuess Jr. is in his seventh year as Nebraska’s Faculty Athletics Representative, having started on July 1, 2020.
As faculty athletics representative, Fuess serves as a liaison between the Office of the Chancellor and Athletic Department. He also serves on the Athletic Director’s Cabinet. His areas of focus in the role include the welfare of student-athletes, NCAA and Big Ten Conference compliance, maintaining the positive relationship between athletics and faculty, developing and responding to NCAA legislative proposals and representing the university at related NCAA and Big Ten Conference meetings. In 2025, he was appointed to the NCAA Division I Academics and Eligibility Committee/ The half-time position reports directly to the University of Nebraska System President Jeffrey P. Gold and consults with Director of Athletics Troy Dannen. He splits time between faculty representative duties and academic responsibilities.
Fuess, the Steinhart Distinguished Professor of Business and former chair of the College of Business’ Department of Economics, has worked at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln since 1986. He serves on the Faculty Senate’s Intercollegiate Athletics Committee, having chaired the committee for 2018-19 and a sub-committee in 2017-18. He also serves on numerous Big Ten Conference committees, specifically, the Compliance and Reinstatement, Olympic Sport Oversight, and Legislative Review committees. Since 2022, he has served as Chair of the B1G Compliance and Reinstatement Committee.
Fuess earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Delaware, as well as master’s and doctoral degrees from Purdue University. His research interests are labor economics, the economics of collegiate sports, and the economy of Japan. He has earned numerous “Distinguished Teaching” awards during his tenure at Nebraska. In 2025, he was honored by the College of Business Career Center as “Sue Vagts Faculty/Staff Partner of the Year” for his work mentoring student-athletes. He also received the UNL College of Business “Distinguished Service” award in 2016.
