Phil Cahoy, Sr. joins the Nebraska Men's Gymnastics program as an assistant coach. Cahoy Sr. has been working in coaching for more than 50 years, with mentees who have achieved the highest levels of success.
"His leadership and experience are immeasurable because he has coached for 50 years," Chmelka said of Cahoy Sr. "His knowledge, leadership and experience is going to help us tremendously. How he reacts with the guys is really wholesome and positive. He gets the most out of kids. That's going to help us this year. We have a very senior-dominate team and with all of the new faces and all of the changes, he's a very welcome entity into our program."
Cahoy Sr. helped coach several notable athletes, including NU gymnasts Phil Cahoy, Jr., current Husker assistant coach Jim Hartung and current head coach Chuck Chmelka, and has served as coach for two Olympians, three NCAA All-Around champions and several NCAA individual event champions and All-Americans.
Cahoy Sr. has coached an unprecedented number of high school and Junior Olympic State Champions and has coached United States National Teams at competitions in Germany, South Africa, Japan, Australia, Switzerland and Hungary.
He has also coached the U.S. National teams at several competitions around the world. He currently owns Cahoy's Gymnastics Training Center and is co-owner of Tumble Bus Inc., a mobile gymnastics program for children. He and his wife, Bernice, have two children: their son, Phil Jr., who was a four-time national champion and standout NU athlete; and their daughter, Catheryne, who is also a successful gymnastics coach.
