Mark Kostek returned to the Nebraska track and field program as the director of operations in December 2020. Kostek came back to NU after serving as the head track and field and cross country coach at Midland University in Fremont, Nebraska from 2013-18.
Kostek is no stranger to the Huskers. He was an assistant coach under Head Coach Gary Pepin from 1980-92 and was promoted to coordinator for the program from 1992-2000. With the Huskers, the women’s team won three NCAA Championships and garnered a combined 54 Big 8 and Big 12 Championships.He coached a total of 27 All-Americans, NCAA Champions and Olympians.
Upon leaving Nebraska, Kostek was appointed as the 10th Director of the Drake Relays from 2000-05.He spent more than a decade at Drake University in various leadership roles. In addition to acting as the track and cross country program supervisor, he worked as an athletic administrator in several positions, including Associate Director of Athletics for External Affairs and Vice President for Sports and Development of Greater Des Moines Convention and Visitors Bureau; Des Moines Sports Commission. Kostek was also the Vice President of Team Iowa Sports from 2012-13.
Kostek joined the Midland Warriors in September 2013 and oversaw both men’s and women’s track and field and cross country programs. The former Connecticut high school state javelin champion and 1976 All-American from the University of Kansas has over 35 years of administrative experience in the sport.
Kostek holds a B.S. in physical education from the University of Nebraska and a Master’s in public administration from Drake University. He is a USATF Certified Master level official and referee and has served as chair on numerous rule committees throughout his career as high up as the US Olympic Trials level. Kostek has been the secretary-rules editor for men's and women's track and field/cross country since 2016 and is currently in his second four-year term which is set to expire in 2024.
Kostek and his wife, Cindy, have four children.
