Keith Hanson spent two seasons as a graduate assistant under Tim Neumann on the Husker coaching staff from 1985-87. Hanson helped guide Nebraska to a 16-5 dual record in 1985-86 and a 12-6 mark in 1986-87. NU crowned one All-American in his two years on the coaching staff.
Hanson brought some experience of his own to the mat, as he was the 1985 NCAA Division II national heavyweight champion for Augustana College (SD). Hanson posted a 30-7-1 record as a senior. In addition to his national championships, Hanson was a two-time North Central Conference runner-up, placed second in the Southwest Missouri Open and finished fourth in the Midwest Classic.
Originally a football recruit, Hanson lettered four years as a defensive tackle while compiling a 58-21-1 career wrestling record. He was also named Scholar-Athlete of the Year at Augustana on the basis of the above mentioned achievements and a 3.2 grade-point average in engineering.
