Omaha attorney J.S. Williams coached Nebraska for only one game, and the Huskers received a 1-0 forfeit win over Missouri, which refused to play NU because it had a black player, George Flippin, on its roster.
Despite being without a coach for most of the season, Nebraska managed a 2-2-1 reocrd that included a 6-0 victory over Illinois in Lincoln in the season opener on Oct. 24, 1892. The victory marked Nebraska's first-ever win over a major team.
Before the season, Nebraska helped form the first-ever collegiate football conference on the plains, joining Missouri, Kansas and Iowa in the Western Inter-State Foot Ball Association.
Nebraska did employ an assistant coach in 1892, as Charles Thomas became the first assistant coach in NU history. Thomas helped provide stability to NU's young program as an assistant in 1892, 1893, 1894 before taking over as the head coach for one season in 1895.
