Jon Osterhout is in his third season as a graduate assistant on the Nebraska coaching staff in 2008. Osterhout will again work with the defense under new head coach Bo Pelini.
During his first two years with the NU staff, Osterhout was worked extensively with the defensive line. In 2007, he assisted as the Huskers' broke in four new starters on the defensive front. In his first year in Lincoln, Osterhout helped develop a unit that included 2006 Big 12 Defensive Lineman of the Year Adam Carriker, who was selected in the first round (13th pick) of the 2007 NFL Draft by St. Louis.
Osterhout came to the Huskers with significant collegiate coaching experience after spending six seasons on the staff at Division I-AA Sacramento State. He served as the Hornets’ defensive line coach from 2002 to 2005, after coaching the tackles and tight ends in 2000 and 2001. Osterhout also served as Sacramento State’s camp director the last two years.
In Osterhout’s first year as defensive line coach, the Hornets allowed 90 fewer rushing yards per game than the previous season and registered 12 sacks more than the previous year. In 2005, Sacramento State recorded 71 tackles for loss, spearheaded by a strong defensive front.
Osterhout enjoyed a standout playing career at Sacramento State from 1995 to 1999. A four-year starter on the offensive line, Osterhout was a two-time All-Big Sky Conference selection and earned first-team All-America honors as a senior.
Osterhout also served as a team captain for the Hornets and was voted the team’s most inspirational player as a senior in addition to earning team MVP honors. He then signed a free agent contract with the Washington Redskins following his graduation from Sacramento State in 1999.
Osterhout is married to the former Alison Gahr, and the couple is expecting their first child this spring.
