A four-year member of the Nebraska wrestling coaching staff, Burton guided the Huskers to a 66-17-1 dual record during his time with the team. He was a part of a coaching staff that helped Nebraska to one of their best seasons ever in 2004. NU earned a 19-3 dual record that year, before finishing second at the Big 12 Championships and fifth at the NCAA Championships. Ten Huskers earned All-American honors under Burton, including national champion Jason Powell.
Before coming to NU, Burton served four seasons as an assistant with Indiana, including holding the head assistant job for his final two seasons in Bloomington. In 1996-97, Burton served as an assistant coach at IowaState, before holding a volunteer coaching position at BoiseState.
At Nebraska, Burton was honored as the 2004 USA Wrestling/FILA Junior/University Man of the Year during the summer of 2004.
While at Indiana, Burton coached All-Americans Kevin Standley at 165 and Victor Seveda at 184 pounds.
Burton earned a spot on the 2000 Olympic Freestyle wrestling team and represented the United States at 85 kilograms, placing fifth in Sydney, Australia.
Burton first made the U.S. National Team in 1999 with a second-place finish at the World Team Trials in Seattle, Wash. He went on to win the 2000 Tahkiti Cup in Tehran, Iran; the 2001 Kiev Open in the Ukraine; and the 2001 Trophe Milone in Rome, Italy. Burton also took home a title from the 1997 University Freestyle tournament; a bronze finish at the 1997 Pan American Games in San Juan, Puerto Rico; and a silver at the 2000 Pan American Games in Cali, Colombia.
In 2000, Burton won the Olympic Trials in Dallas, Texas and silver at the Don Kolov International tournament in Sofia, Bulgaria. Burton claimed a bronze medal at the 2003 World Cup in Boise, Idaho, wrestling at the 84 kilograms/185-pound weight class. Burton also earned a bronze medal in 2001 in Baltimore, Md.
He continued his involvment with international wrestling in the summer of 2004, as he served as tournament director for the FILA Junior National Championships hosted by the University of Nebraska. Those efforts, along with his continued coaching of national team competitors, earned him the 2004 USA Wrestling/FILA Junior/University Man of the Year.
As a collegiate competitor at BoiseState, Burton posted a career record of 101-32-1. During his senior year, he posted a 36-4 mark en route to a third-place finish at the NCAA Championships to earn All-America honors.
Burton earned his bachelor’s degree in general studies from Indiana in 2000. He and his wife, Sarah have two children.
