2007 -- Senior Season

All-American Stephanie Carter was a solid contributor on three events for Nebraska in her final season, competing consistently on vault and floor and also working her way into the bars lineup. The <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Bryn Athyn, Pa., native set career highs on bars (9.85) and floor (9.90) against IowaState on March 11 and performed as an all-arounder at LSU on March 16.

 

Carter opened the 2007 season with scores of 9.825 on vault and 9.80 on floor, helping Nebraska earn a second-place finish at the Super Six Challenge in Fayetteville, Ark. Two weeks later at IowaState, Carter equaled her previous floor score of 9.80 to place sixth, while adding a fifth-place 9.80 on vault. At Missouri, Carter notched an outstanding season-high 9.90 on vault to finish third and followed with three weeks of strong scores on vault and floor. At NC State’s Hearts Invitational on Feb. 17, she notched a pair of 9.875 scores to place fourth on floor and third on vault.

 

Carter’s highlight of the year came against IowaState on March 11, when she tallied career bests of 9.85 on bars and 9.90 on floor to finish second and third, respectively, as well as a 9.875 on vault for third-place honors. For her achievements, Carter was honored as Big 12 Event Specialist of the Week -- the first weekly conference award of her career. Following the Huskers’ away meet at LSU, where Carter matched her season high of 9.90 on vault, she added another runner-up 9.90 vault mark in her final competition in front of Nebraska’s home crowd at the Bob Devaney Sports Center. In addition, Carter achieved a 9.875 for third place on floor to cap her final home meet in Lincoln.

 

Carter took her second career All-Big 12 award after finishing fourth on bars (9.85) at the Big 12 Championships. She added a 9.85 on vault to finish fifth with teammate Michele Zabawa. Carter tied for sixth on vault (9.85) at the NCAA West Regional with Zabawa and Kylie Stone, while also contributing a 9.75 on bars and a 9.80 on floor.

 

In her final NCAA Championships appearance, Carter helped the Nebraska qualify for its ninth Super Six Finals with a pair of 9.775 scores on vault and floor. In team finals the following night, Carter notched a 9.775 on floor and a 9.875 on vault, closing her Husker career in solid fashion. 

 

2006 -- Junior Season

Carter had a solid junior season in 2006, rewriting her individual record books and garnering second-team All-America honors on floor. In the first half of the year, Carter set or tied career highs on three events and the all-around. Consistently ranked in the top 35 or better nationally on vault, Carter had her finest meet against Michigan, when she competed as an all-arounder for just the second time in her career to post a 39.10, and grabbed her first career individual event title on vault (9.90).

Two weeks later against <?xml:namespace prefix="u1"?>Missouri, Carter tied her career high on floor (9.875) to finish second, followed by a career-best-tying 9.875 on beam at Oklahoma.

 

Carter won her second vault title of the season with a 9.775 at Alaska. The Huskers then returned home for their final regular season competition, and she was strong against Arkansas with a 9.825 on vault, a 9.80 on beam and a 9.825 on floor.

Charging into the postseason at the Big 12 Championships, Carter earned an All-Big 12 nod on vault (9.875). She added a 9.85 to finish seventh on floor, in addition to a 9.675 mark on beam. The NCAA Southeast Regional presented Carter the chance to compete in the all-around, and she contributed a career-best 9.75 performance on bars while also notching a 9.80 on vault and a 9.85 on floor.

 

Carter earned her first career All-America honors on floor at the NCAA Championships, tying for eighth (9.85) to take second-team status. She also contributed a 9.80 on beam and a 9.825 on vault. The following night at the Super Six Finals, Carter was strong again, contributing scores of 9.80 on vault, 9.75 on beam and 9.85 on floor to give NU a fifth-place national finish.

 

2005 -- Sophomore Season

Carter competed on vault, beam and floor in nearly every meet. She tied her season best on floor (9.85) six times over the course of the year, including postseason competition at the NCAA South Central Regional and preliminaries at the NCAA Championships.

 

Carter enjoyed one of her best performances at IowaState, posting a career-high 9.95 on vault to tie for second with Emily Parsons. She also tied for third on beam at ISU with a 9.825, a season-high score that she earned three times. Additionally, Carter tied two season-best scores in NU’s final home meet against the Cyclones, earning a 9.825 on beam for third, while finishing sixth on floor (9.85) and fourth on vault (9.85).

 

2004 -- Freshman Season

During her freshman campaign, Carter proved valuable to the Huskers’ vault, beam and floor lineups. She was a power source on vault throughout the year, most notably against IowaState with a 9.925 for a fourth-place finish. Carter also placed fifth on beam at the Masters Classic, scoring a career-high 9.875  In addition, Carter tied Libby Landgraf on floor at the Big 12 Championships with a 9.875 to lead NU in the event.

 

Before Nebraska

An elite-level gymnast, Carter competed for Ricochets under Coach Troy Miller. Carter was a member of the senior U.S. National Team from 1999 to 2000 and a member of the U.S. Junior National Team from 1997 to 1999. As an elite competitor, she finished 11th in the all-around and third on bars at the 1998 U.S. Classic, as well as 13th in the all-around and ninth on bars at the U.S. Championships that same year. Carter placed 10th in the all-around at the 1999 U.S. Championships and later became the first American woman to complete a double-twisting double-back in competition at the 1999 World Team Trials in Kansas City.

 

Personal

Stephanie Carter was born Oct. 17, 1983, and is the daughter of Christopher and Jane Carter. One of five children, she has two sisters, Sonya and Jerre, and two brothers, Brett and Daniel. A 2002 graduate of the Academy of the NewChurch, Carter studied engineering at Georgia Tech for one year before coming to Nebraska.

 

Carter received her bachelor's degree in business administration in May 2007 and was a three-time academic All-Big 12 honoree. She was named to the Dean's List and the Big 12 Commissioner's Honor Roll every semester and was honored as a NACGC Scholastic All-American three times. Carter was a two-year member of the Nebraska Student-Athlete Advisory Committee.
