Brian Kmitta joined the Nebraska Athletic Department staff as an assistant strength coach in 2009 and he was promoted to the Director of Olympic Sports Performance in July of 2019. Kmitta serves as the strength and conditioning coach for track and field and volleyball.
Since Kmitta began working with the Nebraska volleyball program in 2014, the Huskers have won two NCAA titles (2015 and 2017) and two Big Ten titles (2016 and 2017). Kmitta has trained 95 All-Americans in his career in volleyball, track and field, tennis and gymnastics. He also has trained Olympic gold medalist wrestler Jordan Burroughs, who is a four-time world champion.
Originally from South Bend, Ind., Kmitta graduated from Anderson University, where he received his bachelor’s degree in physical education in 2004. In his final year in college, Kmitta worked as a student assistant for the football team’s offensive line, and as strength and conditioning coach.
After graduation, Kmitta served as assistant running backs coach and strength and conditioning coach at Anderson. He then spent a year at the University of Louisville as an intern strength and conditioning coach, before coming to Nebraska as an intern in the strength and conditioning program in 2006.
Kmitta is a CSCS certified strength and conditioning specialist and an NSCA registered strength and conditioning coach.
Kmitta and his wife, Sarah, have four children: Brian III, Agnes, and twins John and Edwin.
