Anna Schrad wrapped up her four-year career with a solid senior campaign in 2003. A three-year starter at outside hitter and a team co-captain as a senior, she averaged a career-high 3.09 kills per game in 2003. Schrad totaled 358 kills and was one of three Huskers with at least 350 kills on the season, joining All-Americans Melissa Elmer and Jennifer Saleaumua. A versatile player who played on both the left and the right side during her career, she was chosen to three all-tournament tams as a senior. Schrad posted double-figure kills in 17 matches in 2003, including a career-high 22 kills in a win at <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>IllinoisState. She finished her career with 986 kills, 866 digs and 274 total blocks in 131 matches. Schrad was also honored for her work in the classroom, as she was presented with a postgraduate scholarship from the Big 12. Schrad, a three-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree, earned second-team CoSIDA Academic All-America honors in 2003.
2003: Outlook
After playing a supporting part as the Huskers? second left side hitter during the past two seasons, Anna Schrad?s role will change in 2003. The most experienced player on a young squad, Schrad (pronounced SHROD) will become NU?s primary outside hitter. Husker Coach John Cook said Schrad has the physical tools and athleticism to become NU? top offensive weapon.
As NU?s go-to player on the left side, Schrad?s 2.34 career kills-per-game average should increase as she gets more attempts. Schrad is also Nebraska?s top returning blocker on the left side, and Cook expects her 0.74 blocks-per-game average from a year ago to rise.
Cook added that Schrad, who owns a 3.913 cumulative grade-point average in exercise science, is one of the most "hard-working players on and off the court" that he has coached.
2002: Junior Season
Schrad was one of the Huskers? steadiest all-around performers, averaging 2.65 kills per game, 0.34 service aces per game and 2.26 digs per game in 94 games played. She also averaged 2.93 kills per game against ranked opponents.
Schrad, who started every match, was consistently effective at the service line. She ranked third on the team with 27 service aces, posting a service ace in 15 matches. Schrad notched 12 service aces against NU?s ranked opponents, second most on the team. She posted a career-high six aces at Oklahoma Oct. 16, when she served 14 straight points in the first game. Schrad recorded five aces at Arizona Sept. 7.
Offensively, Schrad posted at least 10 kills 10 times. She totaled a season-best 16 kills at Kansas State Sept. 18, erring just once in 37 attacks for a .405 hitting percentage. Schrad, who was usually Nebraska?s fourth option on offense, played an impressive match against Texas A&M Oct. 26, recording 13 kills and erring just twice on 26 attacks for a .423 hitting percentage.
Schrad hit .231 on the season, but she hit .300 or higher 11 times and .500 or higher four times. She hit .600 against Alabama Sept. 14, posting four kills and one error on five attempts. Against Colorado on Oct. 2, Schrad produced 11 kills on 17 attacks with just one error for a .588 clip.
Defensively, Schrad posted 10 digs on seven separate occasions, and she had a season-high 15 Dec. 14 against Hawaii in the NCAA regional final match.
2001: Sophomore Season
The only new starter in the Husker lineup, Schrad played like a veteran for NU in 2001. She ranked second on the team with 29 service aces and recorded a career-best five service aces against Oral Roberts in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Nov. 30. Schrad was second on the team with 3.04 digs per game, and she led NU in Big 12 matches with 3.27 digs per game, a mark that ranked ninth in the league. Schrad produced at least 10 digs in 19 matches, including a career-best 18 at Kansas State in the second round of the NCAA Tournament Dec. 1. She led Nebraska in digs 11 times. Schrad was also Nebraska?s best left side blocker with 0.72 per game.
Offensively, Schrad averaged 2.35 kills per game on a .217 hitting percentage, and she increased her kills-per-game average to 2.37 in the NCAA Tournament. She posted a career-best 17 kills and added 13 digs against Colorado State in the NCAA regional semifinal Dec. 7.
Schrad had her best match of the season against Pacific Aug. 25, posting a then-season-high 15 kills on a .303 hitting percentage with 17 digs. She also had a double-double at Texas Nov. 3 with 10 kills and 13 digs.
2000: Freshman Season
The Huskers? third outside hitter in 2000, Schrad averaged 1.91 kills per game and 1.65 digs per game in 69 games played. Schrad started NU?s last two regular-season matches of the season and its first two NCAA Tournament matches in place of sophomore Laura Pilakowski, who was recovering from surgery. Schrad made the most of the opportunity, leading the Huskers in a 3-2 win at Kansas State Nov. 25 with 15 kills and 17 digs, both season-best totals. She tied her season best in digs with 17 against South Carolina in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.
Schrad totaled 14 service aces and finished the regular season tied for 15th among Big 12 players with 0.26 service aces per game in conference matches.
Schrad spent the summer following her freshman season competing with the U.S. Junior National Team. The team finished third out of six at the World Championship Qualifier in Monterry, Mexico, in June. Schrad was named "Best Server" at the event.
High School
Schrad joined the Huskers after a stellar career at Lincoln Pius X, where she was a three-time all-state selection and was named the 1999 Gatorade Nebraska Volleyball Player of the Year. A first-team Volleyball Magazine All-American, Schrad logged 1,052 kills, 182 blocks, 108 service aces and 571 digs in her career for the Thunderbolts.
She was named Huskerland Prep Report Miss Volleyball and was a three-time all-city volleyball selection. Schrad played for the Nebraska Juniors club team under Coach Gwen Egbert, where she was a three-time All-American and led her team to ninth-, fifth- and third-place national finishes. The captain of the U.S. Junior National Team as a senior, she led her team to the 1999 NORCECA Zonal Championships and a sixth-place finish at the World Championships.
In the classroom, Schrad was a two-time academic all-state selection and graduated with a 4.0 grade-point average. She was Pius? 1998 Chemistry Student of the Year and 1999 French Student of the Year.
