2002: Outlook
NU Coach John Cook said freshman middle blocker Nicole Westerterp is a developing player who will probably redshirt. Cook said the coaching staff is excited about Westerterp?s athleticism, and he predicts that she will be a great blocker who will remind people of former Nebraska All-American middle blocker Jenny Kropp.

High School
Westerterp completed Nebraska?s 2002 class when she committed to the Huskers in September. The right-handed hitter was a four-year letterwinner for Coach Shawn Miller-Shackelford at West Brook High School in Beaumont. Westerterp, who was named to the Beaumont Enterprise Super Gold Team as a senior in 2001, posted 342 kills in 2001 and averaged eight blocks per match. A two-time first-team all-district honoree, Westerterp played one year of club volleyball for Club Texas and posted an .800 hitting percentage in a single match while competing in the USVBA Junior National Championships 17 Open division in the summer of 2001.

A talented athlete, Westerterp also earned four letters as a high jumper in track, four in basketball, three in softball and one in powerlifting at West Brook High. Westerterp was a three-time all-district selection in basketball and earned honorable-mention all-district honors as a first baseman and outfielder in softball.

Westerterp, whose uncle, Louie Kelcher, played for the NFL?s San Francisco 49ers and the San Diego Chargers, chose Nebraska over Texas A&M.
