Career Wrapup
In four seasons at Nebraska, Lindsay Wischmeier never missed a match will competing as a setter her freshman season, a defensive specialist her sophomore and junior seasons, and as NU’s first-ever libero in her senior season. The 2002 team captain, she played in 133 straight matches and saw action in 436 of a possible 438 games during her four years as a Husker. Wischmeier tallied 1,111 career digs, breaking the Nebraska record of 1,086 set by Angie Oxley in 2000. wischmeier is one of just six players to record more than 1,000 digs. Wischmeier’s 3.35 digs-per game average in 2002 ranked fourth all-time at NU, and her 345 digs as a senrio was the 10th best single-season mark in school history. A 1999 second-team All-America Farm Team pick, Wischmeier spent her freshman season splitting time at the setter position in the Huskers’ 6-2 offense and set a freshman record with 724 assists. Equally successful off the court, Wischmeier was a three-time first-team academic All-Big 12 selection.
2002 Outlook
Senior Lindsay Wischmeier (pronounced WISH-my-er) has never missed a match since arriving at Nebraska, playing in 100 straight contests and 335 of a possible 337 games. But she will likely have her greatest impact on the program this season because of the NCAA Volleyball Rules Committee’s decision to include the libero position used at the international level.
Designed as a ball control and defensive specialist, the libero position is a perfect fit for Wischmeier, Nebraska Coach John Cook said. And because the libero can play nearly the entire match rather than just three rotations as a defensive specialist would, Nebraska will benefit from having Wischmeier’s leadership for a greater amount of time. Cook said Wischmeier, will be the “heart and soul of the team,” and possesses great instincts and volleyball knowledge.
Wischmeier, one of the best servers on the squad, may also serve as a defensive specialist rather than a libero when the Huskers need to run points in critical situations (the libero does not serve).
2001 (Junior)
Wischmeier played in every match for Nebraska and was one of two Huskers who played in all 108 games. She ended the 2001 season with her 100 consecutive-matches played streak in tact. Wischmeier was a stabilizer for the Huskers with her consistent passing and defensive play. She ranked fourth on the team with 2.50 digs per game, and she averaged 2.73 digs per game in Big 12 matches. Wischmeier posted double-figure dig totals nine times, including Aug. 25 against Pacific (11), Sept. 7 against Pepperdine (10), Sept. 9 against UCLA (12) Sept. 19 at Colorado (12), Oct. 6 against Oklahoma (13), Oct. 24 at Missouri (15), Nov. 7 against Texas A&M (11), Nov. 18 against Texas Tech (13) and Nov. 24 at Iowa State (12). She produced a season-high 15 digs at Missouri Oct. 24.
Off the court, Wischmeier earned her second first-team Academic All-Big 12 honor.
2000 (Sophomore)
As a back-row substitute for sophomore middle blocker Amber Holmquist, Wischmeier was tied for fourth on the team with 2.14 digs per game. Wischmeier came up with several key digs Dec. 2 in Nebraska’s comeback against South Carolina in the NCAA Tournament second round and posted 2.75 digs per game in NU’s first two postseason matches, 0.62 higher than her season average. She averaged 2.39 digs per game in NU’s six NCAA Tournament matches.
Wischmeier posted double-figure dig totals six times in 2000, including 13 digs against Hawaii Dec. 14 in the NCAA national semifinals. She tied her career best with 18 digs in Nebraska’s 3-1 win at Texas A&M on Nov. 8.
Wischmeier was third on the team with 30 service aces. She produced at least two service aces in a match six times, including a season-best three service aces at Kansas Sept. 20 and against IowaState Nov. 15. Wischmeier finished the regular season tied for 13th in the Big 12 with .28 service aces per game. Wischmeier was the only Husker who played in all of Nebraska’s 115 games in 2000.
1999 (Freshman)
Wischmeier helped make up the best freshman class in Nebraska history and became a crowd favorite after playing in all 33 matches and 112 of 114 games. She was honored as a second-team All-American Farm Team selection by Successful Farming after sharing the starting setter role with Jill McWilliams in Nebraska’s 6-2 offense. Wischmeier set a freshman school record with 724 assists (6.46 apg) and finished just one shy of McWilliams’ season total.
Perhaps Wischmeier’s most impressive feat was leading the team in service aces with 30, which ranked 10th in the Big 12. She is just the second freshman in school history to lead the team in service aces, joining Kim Tonniges, who landed 36 aces in 1991. In comparison, she had just 18 service errors on the year.
One of just six players to play in all 33 matches, Wischmeier started 10 contests and finished the season with 250 digs (2.23 dpg), the fourth-highest total on the team.
In her first collegiate start, the former Class D-2 all-state selection recorded 24 assists, two service aces and nine digs in front of a nationally televised audience against eventual Final Four participant Pacific.
She stood out in big matches, recording a season-high 37 assists against eventual national champion PennState and posted a season-best five service aces and a career-high 18 digs against Texas in Austin. Against top-25 teams, she averaged 7.06 assists, 2.16 digs and team-high 0.3 service aces per game.
High School
Wischmeier led LewistonHigh School to three Class D-2 state championship appearances, including state titles in 1995 and 1997. She was named to the LincolnJournalStarSecond-TeamSuper-State squad and was the Class D-2 honorary captain. The Omaha World-Herald tabbed her second-team All-Nebraska player in 1998 after earning the Class D-2 Player-of-the-Year award from Huskerland Prep Report. She helped Lewiston compile a 100-10 record during her four-year career. She set school records for single-match kills (26), career assists (1,035) and career digs (822). She finished the 1998 season with 331 kills, 312 assists and 79 service aces. Wischmeier also stood out in the classroom as a three-time academic all-state member. She played club volleyball for the Lincoln Juniors.
