Outlook (2006-07)

As the only three time letterwinner on the <?xml:namespace prefix="st1" ns="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:smarttags"?>Nebraska roster, James Clow (pronounced CLOU) takes on a new role this year as team captain.  Throughout his career, Clow has demonstrated an intense work ethic and a strong dedication to the program.  As one of last year’s most improved players and coming off a strong fall season in 2006, Clow now looks to bring his experience and success into 2007 to culminate his Nebraska career.

 

Head coach Kerry McDermott said it is Clow’s ability to lead by example that sets him apart on this year’s team.

 

“We are fortunate to have James not only because of his talent, but because he has the ability to motivate the team through his tenacity on the court,” McDermott said.  “Our guys look up to him and when they see his dedication, it pushes them to match it.”

 

As a Junior (2005-06)

Clow got a quick start in the 2006 regular season, winning 10 of his first 13 matches including a six-match winning streak.  Following a quick start playing primarily at the three spot, Clow then moved into the two spot where he was a strong competitor but struggled to come away with wins.  During the second half of the season, Clow faced nationally ranked opponents, for the first time in regular-season play, on three separate occasions.  Finishing off the regular season, Clow came away with an even overall record in singles, 11-11, and also in doubles, 10-10.

 

As a Sophomore (2004-05)

Clow was one of two Huskers to earn a winning record in singles play, producing a 13-12 overall record in the regular season.  He split time between the No.2, 3 and 4 spots, hitting a six-match win streak through the first part of the spring 2005 season.  Clow was inserted into the lineup at the No. 2 singles slot eight times and came away with a 6-2 record and also saw his first career action at the No. 1 spot in a match against Texas A&M-Corpus Christi.

 

As a Freshman (2003-04)

Clow finished his rookie season with an 8-14 singles mark, just one off the Huskers’ season high.  He tied for second on the team in conference wins, and owned a team-best five wins at No. 4 singles spot.  His 5-3 record at the No. 4 spot represented the third-highest winning percentage at any position in 2004.  Clow went 6-5 to end the season, including a 4-1 mark in one stretch.  In doubles play, Clow was 1-7 with three partners, picking up his only victory at No. 3 doubles with Jerry Posch.  In the classroom, Clow was named to the Big 12 Commissioner’s Spring Honor Roll.

 

High School

Clow attended DurbanHigh School in Durban, South Africa.  He lettered three times under Coach Bruce Johnson, playing primarily at the No. 1 position in singles.  He earned honors four years for his play on the court, including twice earning top honors for all South African schools.  During his career, Clow was ranked as high as No. 7 nationally in South Africa in junior singles.  In 2001, Clow reached the under-18 finals of the Regents Super Series 7 Border championships in London.

 

Personal

James was born on Feb. 10, 1985, in Durban, South Africa, and is the son of David and Judy Clow.  He has one sister, Joanne (22), and one brother, Greg (30) and is majoring in Business Administration at Nebraska.
