Ty Capps Season 2006-07

Senior (2006-07)
Senior Ty Capps made the adjustment to Division I golf last season, and is poised for a strong finish to his collegiate career. He finished the fall in the third spot in the Husker lineup with a 74.54 stroke average through 13 rounds. Capps also snagged three top-15 finishes in just five tournaments.

Capps earned a spot on the U.S. Amateur in July, representing his home state of Colorado, and followed with a strong fall to head into the his final spring season as one of the leaders on a deep squad.

“Ty took the best parts of his golf game and really fine-tuned them all last year,” Nebraska Coach Bill Spangler said. “His ability to make some adjustments turned out to be just what we needed to help our team reach our goals last year, and I look forward to seeing what he can accomplish this spring.”

Junior (2005-06)
Capps adjusted to golf on the Division I level after transferring from South Mountain Community College. Capps finished the season in the fifth spot for the Huskers with a 75.11 stroke average through 27 rounds, improving more than two strokes on his 77.22 fall stroke average. He participated in three tournaments in the fall and improved 29 strokes on his final score between his first and last tournament. Capps’ best fall performance was a 218 (69-71-78) at the Sam Hall Invitational, as he produced his then-season and career-low round of 69 and finished in a tie for 31st. He continued to contribute to the Husker scoring lineup in the spring, as he earned three top-25 finishes. The highlight came with an individual title at the Branson Creek Invitational. Capps finished with a 215 (74-68-73) and carried the momentum to the Wyoming Cowboy Classic a week later, where he earned his season-low score of 211 (72-67-72) and earned a tie for 11th. He also shot season and career-low score of 67 twice in the spring at both the Ron Moore Invitational and the Wyoming Cowboy Classic.  Capps continued to improve throughout the summer. He qualified for the U.S. Amateur Championship Aug. 21-27. He was second in his qualifying field with a 137 at the Murphy Creek Golf Course in Aurora, Colo, and represented his home state of Colorado as well as the Husker golf team at the 106th U.S. Amateur Championship at the Hazeltine Country Club in Chaska, Minn.

Before Nebraska
Capps came to Nebraska after building his golf game for two years at South Mountain Community College in Phoenix, Ariz. Capps was part of a Cougar golf squad that made it to the Junior College National Championships two years in a row, winning the championship as a freshman in 2004. He had a standout prep career at ThunderRidge High School in Highlands Ranch, Colo., where he was coached by Jim McCord. Under McCord, Capps recorded two top-20 finishes at the state championships his junior and senior year, including an eighth-place finish his junior year. Capps also qualified for the U.S. Amateur in 2002, where he finished fourth in sectionals.

Personal
Ty is the son of Stephanie and Gary Capps and was born on Sept. 27, 1983. He has one brother, Kody (20). Capps is majoring in political science.
