Sophomore (2013-14)
Kolton Lapa (pronounced LAP-uh) has established himself as a team leader in his second year with the Nebraska men’s golf program after a successful freshman season in 2012-13. Lapa was one of two Huskers to compete in every tournament during the fall season and managed a 74.73 stroke average over five tournaments. Lapa makes birdies in bunches and looks to continue improving heading into the spring season.
Freshman (2012-13)
Lapa made an immediate impact for Nebraska, competing in every tournament and leading the team with a 74.27 stroke average over 33 rounds. Following two top-25 finishes in his first three starts, Lapa strung together three consecutive top-10s from October to February. He set the school record for 54-hole score by a freshman at the Herb Wimberly Intercollegiate with 211 strokes. The performance led to a tie for seventh and Big Ten Golfer-of-the-Week honors.
Lapa closed the fall with a tie for eighth at the Price’s Give ‘Em Five Invitational with 215 strokes and matched that total in the first stroke-play event of the spring. This time it led to his best finish of the season, a tie for fifth, at the Wyoming Desert Intercollegiate. Lapa garnered Big Ten Golfer-of-the-Week accolades for the second time for his performance. Lapa led the Huskers in five of 11 stroke play tournaments, including a tie for 22nd at the Big Ten Championships.
Before Nebraska
Lapa came to Nebraska with playing experience at Red Mountain High School in Mesa, Ariz. Lapa helped guide the Mountain Lions to the 2010 state championship, where he finished fifth individually. In addition, he was named first-team all-state in 2010 and 2011.
Lapa also has experience playing on the Junior Golf Association of Arizona as well as the Desert Junior Golf tours. He won the 2012 Tucson City Junior Championship, while tying for third at the Arizona Stroke Play Championship. Lapa won the 2012 PING Junior Classic at Southern Dunes Golf Club and the 2012 JGAA/SWSPGA state championship at Longbow Golf Club. Lapa also tied for first at two AJGA events and tied for third at the 2011 PING Arizona Junior Masters.
