Bertram “Buzzy” Caruthers is in his third year as Director of Player Development. Caruthers fills several roles in the day-to-day operation of the Husker program and assists in developing programming for basketball student athletes. Caruthers has also served as an analyst for Nebraska basketball games on B1G+.
Caruthers has more than a decade of basketball coaching experience. Before joining the Nebraska staff in 2019, he spent two years at Lincoln University in Jefferson City, Mo., before coaching at Maryville University in 2018-19. At Lincoln, he helped the school to consecutive MIAA Tournament appearances, including 17 wins before falling to eventual national champion Northwest Missouri State in 2017.
He gained Division I experience as a graduate assistant at St. John’s during the 2015-16 campaign, and he has also worked at Butler Community College, Chipola College, Dodge City Community College, Barstow High School and Sumner Academy of Arts and Science.
At the junior college level, Caruthers helped Butler achieve 19 wins and advance to the regional semifinal in 2016. At Dodge City, Butler Community College and Chipola College, Caruthers coached 20 players who went on to play at either the NCAA Division I or Division II level, including eight all-conference selections.
At the high school level, Caruthers helped turn around the Barstow basketball program, establishing a new culture of winning. He helped lead the team to a program-record 24-win season. Caruthers coached at the MOKAN Elite program, one of the top grassroots programs in the nation. Caruthers directed camps run by former Husker great and current Los Angeles Clippers Coach Tyronn Lue and NBA performer Alec Burks. In the offseason, Caruthers works on skill development for professional players, including Burks, Kyle Weems and former Husker Shavon Shields. Through his camps and various coaching stops, Caruthers has coached more than 40 players who have gone on to play at the NCAA Division I or Division II level.
A native of Kansas City, Kan., Caruthers played his high school ball at Sumner Academy, winning two state championships. Caruthers graduated from Hampton University with a bachelor of science degree in finance in 2006.
