2005-06 (Freshman)
Mike Smith redshirted his first season at Nebraska. He practiced with the squad but did not play in any games during the regular season. Smith initially planned to transfer after last semester but returned to the Cornhusker program in August following a meeting with Doc Sadler soon after his hiring as head coach.

Before Nebraska
Smith played his final two seasons of prep ball at Bronx Regional High School under Coach Wade Williams. Smith averaged 18 points and nine assists per game to pace the squad as a senior.

A two-year starter at point guard, Smith led his team to its second straight Alternative League championship with a 15-1 record in 2005 and won the league’s player-of-the-year award. Smith recorded single-game highs of 33 points, 11 assists and seven rebounds during his senior campaign.

As a junior, Smith led Bronx Regional to a 16-1 record while averaging 15 points and six assists per game. Smith also lettered in basketball as a sophomore.

Smith, whose father, Lee Green, played collegiate ball at St. John’s, has also played with LPAC, a Bronx-based AAU program organized by Ruben Tavarez, and with a Riverside club coached by Joe Lieonlie. Smith averaged 23 points per game with Riverside.

Smith was the final signee for the Huskers' 2005 class, as he signed his National Letter-of-Intent in early May. He graduated from high school with honors.
