Outlook
One of the most prolific scorers in Kansas City prep history, Marcus Walker joins the Husker program looking to add an up-tempo offensive flair. With tremendous range that reaches well past the 3-point line, Walker provides Nebraska with a dual-threat, as his quickness and acceleration allows him to penetrate off the dribble. He possesses great court vision and hopes to make a smooth transition to college point guard while fighting for significant playing time as a rookie.
High School
A four-star recruit who was listed among the top 25 point guards nationally by scout.com, Walker helped the O'Hara Celtics to a 78-34 record over the last four seasons, including a 27-5 mark in 2005. Walker recorded four games of at least 40 points as a senior, including a 40-point outburst in the Class 4 state title game, leading O'Hara to the win, 81-77, in double overtime.
Ranked among the top 150 recruits nationally by Van Coleman of hoopmasters.com, Walker averaged 30.3 points, 4.4 rebounds and 4.0 assists as a senior while repeating as the DiRenna Award winner as the top player in the Kansas City Metro area. He was only the fourth player to receive the accolade twice in the award's 51-year history.
Playing for coach Todd Magwire, Walker finished his career as the Kansas City metro area scoring leader with 2,790 career points, surpassing the previous record set by Anthony Peeler (2,477 points in 1988). Walker also moved onto the state’s all-time top 25 scorers list after setting career, season (972 points as senior) and single-game (54 as junior) school records.
As a junior, Walker led O’Hara to a 20-8 record and helped the Celtics advance to the Class 4 quarterfinals. Walker averaged 26.9 points, six rebounds, five assists and three steals per game in 2003-04, including a career-high 54 points in a 91-86 double-overtime victory against Kearney. He led the team in scoring in all but two games as a junior, including 16 games with at least 25 points.
Walker was named first-team all-metro each of his last three seasons and was the metro area player of the year as a junior and senior.
During the summer season, Walker attended the 2004 Rebook ABCD Camp, where he tied for the tournament lead with 3.9 assists per game and was named one of the top 10 point guards in attendance.
Personal
The son of Shayleen Walker and Marc Beachem and stepson of James Couch, Marcus was born Aug. 22, 1986, and has three sisters, Andrea Beachem, Arika Beachem and Ashley Beachem, and two brothers, Jaylen Walker and Marc Beachem. Marcus chose the Huskers over Kansas State and Duquesne, after also receiving offers from Arkansas, Illinois, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Purdue and Washington.
