2022-23 (Redshirt Freshman)
No Husker saw his role change more dramatically during the year than Sam Hoiberg. After playing just 12 minutes in NU's first 20 contests, the redshirt freshman moved into the rotation and became an essential part of the Husker lineup. On the season, he appeared in 21 games, averaging 4.1 points on 55 percent shooting and 1.8 rebounds per game. Over NU's final 12 contests, he averaged 6.6 points per game while shooting 58 percent from the floor and 47 percent from 3-point range. He also added 2.9 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game, while showing the knack of being at the right place in key moments. Hoiberg moved into the rotation following Emmanuel Bandoumel's season-ending injury and made an immediate impact with six points and a team-high six rebounds in 18 minutes against Northwestern on Jan. 25. Hoiberg then poured in a career-high 15 points on 6-of-8 shooting, including 3-of-3 from 3-point range, in 26 minutes at Maryland. He keyed NU's win at Maryland on Feb. 19 with nine points, six rebounds and two steals, including a steal and basket with 34.9 seconds left in overtime in NU's 70-66 win. He reached double figures for the second time this season against Minnesota on Feb. 25 with 11 points, six rebounds and two steals in 23 minutes of work. Hoiberg had nine points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and drew a key charge in the win at Iowa on March 5.
2021-22 (Redshirt)
Hoiberg redshirted in his first year at Nebraska after walking on to the team. Hoiberg helped to run the scout team in practice and provided backcourt depth.
Before Nebraska
Hoiberg played two seasons at Lincoln Pius X High School for Coach Brian Spicka, earning honorable-mention Class A all-state honors in both seasons. The 6-foot, 183-pound guard helped Pius X to the Class A State Tournament and an 18-4 record as a senior, averaging 14.9 points, 4.2 rebounds, 3.8 assists and 2.0 steals per game. A first-team all-city pick by the Lincoln Journal Star, Hoiberg was an honorable-mention all-state honoree by both the Omaha World-Herald and Journal Star in 2020-21. He made an immediate impact in his first season in 2019-20, averaging 14.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 3.5 assists per game as the Thunderbolts went 16-8 and reached the district finals. For his efforts, he was a second-team all-city and first-team Heartland Athletic Conference pick. He played his sophomore season at Hinsdale (Ill.) Central and played AAU basketball with Breakaway Basketball before moving to Lincoln when his father was named head coach of the Husker basketball program in April of 2019. A two-sport athlete, Sam Hoiberg also played golf as a senior, helping the school to a runner-up finish at the 2021 Class A State Championship. He also excelled in the classroom, earning Academic All-State accolades as a junior and senior.
Personal
The son of Carol and Fred Hoiberg, Sam was born on March 21, 2003, in Chicago, Illinois. He has two brothers (Jack and Charlie) and one sister (Paige). His oldest brother, Jack, played his college ball at Michigan State and UT Arlington, while his father, Fred, played at Iowa State and spent a decade in the NBA with three franchises. Sam is majoring in sports media and communications.
